WINES OF CANADA
About the Canadian Wine Industry
Wines of Canada is an initiative of the Canadian Vintners Association (CVA) and regional wine associations – the British Columbia Wine Institute (winebc.com), the Wine Marketing Association of Ontario for VQA Wines of Ontario/Wine Country Ontario (winecountryontario.ca)
to promote our cool climate wines across Canada and abroad.
Currently, there are 550 grape wineries and 1600 growers (30,000 acres) across Canada in the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Québec and Nova Scotia. We invite you to explore our vibrant wine regions and taste cool climate excellence!
Why we are supporting the ICCWS
Beth McMahon, VP, Government and Public Affairs, comments: “Canada is a premium cool climate wine producer and we believe that the International Cool Climate Wine Symposium will be a great opportunity to showcase our dynamic wines and advance global awareness of Canada as a serious wine producer.
With 550 grape wineries in four provinces across Canada, we have many captivating stories to share, varietals to experience and terroir to explore. From Aligoté to Merlot to Zweigelt, Canada’s cool climate is conducive to growing wide range of varietals with full flavour and complexity, lower alcohol, and the perfect amount of natural acidity. Canada is also a leader in cool climate wine research, dedicated to continual improvement and investment in vineyard and winemaking practices.
Canada is not only the largest and most award-winning producer of Icewine, but increasingly recognized for our excellence in cool-climate chardonnay, pinot noir and sparkling wine (to name a few). In recent years, Canadian wines have been awarded more than 1000 medals annually in international competition, including the 2013 Decanter International Trophy for Pinot Noir under £15 (Mission Hill).
There are a growing number of Canadian wines available in UK market, as top sommeliers discover Canada’s true “red and white” nature and look to share the story of our wine regions with patrons. Visitors from the UK to Canada are also captivated by our welcoming wine regions, clear ‘wine route’ signage, gorgeous winery tasting rooms (no reservations needed!), and top-rated on-site restaurants. In fact, Canadian wineries welcome more than 3 million tourists each year.
Wines of British Columbia, VQA Wines of Ontario and CVA are very pleased to collaborate under the banner of Wines of Canada to support the efforts of ICCWS, and look forward to further building international understanding and appreciation for cool climate wines.”
